ManCat Monday

A cat has absolute emotional honesty: human beings, for one reason or another, may hide their feelings, but a cat does not.  - Ernest Hemingway

Nope, you know when we are mad, happy, tired. Watch our whiskers, ears and tails for clues!

Mum read an interesting fact on her cat calendar a few weeks ago.

"Orange cats are always striped and never solid; the gene for their orange-ness lies on the same place in the chromosome as the gene for striped fur. Therefore all red, orange or yellow cats are inevitably tabbies or striped."

OK, Derby just had subtle strips on his legs and tail. Me you can see some faint body stripes too. We both had the "M" on on faces.

Both of us!
 Both of us again!
 Me, my very subtle stripes.

This guy, is the kittie, Puddin, who lived where Grampie lived at the nursing home. You can see his stripes too! Isn't this a cool thing?

So my orinch buddies, show me your stripes!

  1. Because the Somali breed is based on a red-orange shade of fur, we are technically tabbies, but it is expressed in our ticked fur - instead of stripes on our bodies, each strand of hair has stripes or bands of color! When we do have stripes, it's considered a fault and Somalis (and Abys) with stripes may be awesome pets but they don't do well in cat show competitions.

Just a fun fact for you there!

    Here he is- http://www.shelter-cats.com/2015/08/rufus-the-red/
That is so interesting about stripes and orange being linked. I think sweet temperament and being a big foodie is linked too!

  7. Our Angel Hercule was an orange Persian, but he didn't seem to have stripes : do you think it's because he had long hair ? Purrs

  9. We didn't know that about orange cats and stripes. Newton has stripes, but with this longish hair, they're kind of indistinct except around his face and legs.

  14. Mr Hemingway is wrong. Beins dont unnerstand deception near as well as we felines do. And we mean felines of all types and sizes!

Our feline memory tells us that the only reason Beins exist is that we made sure not ta kill off one of our food supplies when Beings were annoying little apes without defenses. They were always good fer a safe meal.

Our mistake was in not seeing what those damn pointy sticks and the fire-stuff were doing for them. Then all of a sudden, things changed. If not fer that, WE would be on top. With Beins in our dens and fer food.

But we sent our smallest and cutest ones ta live among you. And we are learning... Heh, heh, heh...

  20. Lots of interesting info. on orinch cats DNA today Ducky. It is also interestin' that both you & Derby had the M above your eyes. My buddy Cosmo & I have the same M marking above each eye. We aren't lucky enough to have orinch furs, but we do have lovely browns & cream furs. Mom calls us her cafe au lait kitties (whatever that means). When we were kittens, the vet told our mom that when a tabby cat has that special "M" on their forehead, then that cat is called a Classic Mackerel Tabby or a "fishbone tabby". We guess some peoples thought the skinny stripes looked like some deaded fish's bones. There are 4 different kinds of tabbies & we think Classic Mackerels are the bestest - don't you Ducky? Even though we aren't orinch like you, we love our interestin' markings. It was a treat gettin' to see some photos of Derby today. We 'specially like that photo of you & Derby snoozing with your heads together - it is pure kitty sweetness!
