Crochet

End of the week, actually is Friday, next to last day of May. Where is the year going!

I got a flyer from a store that I have purchased yarn from by mail. They are having their annual warehouse sale soon. I have no place to put more yarn, I will pass on it, at least this year. The place is two hours away in the town I grew up in!

All of the JoAnn's in my area are closed and I guess every store will be done by the close of business on May 30. I bought up what I know I can use but didn't get crazy and just buy to be buying.

Red Heart, Wildflower
Loops & Threads, Orchard Mist, the stripes come from different yarn lots. Something that happens if you purchase by mail order. They aren't always careful about sending the same lot number.
Loops & Threads, Lotus Blossom

Loops & Threads, Primrose Multi

Wonderful Wordy Wednesday

Hello, and I am all mixed up on my days with the holiday on Monday, which I thought of as Sunday. So writing this on the evening of Wednesday.

Busy with inside and outside stuff, but the outside stuff I have to work in between the rainy days. The holiday weekend was nice but then I had just finished mowing the grass. Now it needs it again.

Just two pics from the parade on Monday. One thing about being IN the parade you don't get to see it! Short parade, took about 30 minutes to get through the route. Was up early to meet the group for breakfast at 7 AM, then to the parade set up area, the actual parade at 10 AM and I was home by 11 AM.

I didn't end up with a nice picture of the car I was riding in with my friend Babs. Duh, oh well. Hope everyone had a good holiday weekend.

Murder Under Cover the next installment of the Bibliophile Mystery series. Brooklyn's friend Robin returns from visiting her mom in India. Included is an old book for restoration. The book? The Kama Sutra! Robin also meets a guy, they spend the night together. Only thing she wakes up covered in blood and they guy is dead. Twisty tale of who done it!

The Lost Book of Bonn - Emmy is a librarian at the Library of Congress. In 1946 she is assigned to help the US Army go through books to see if they can reunite books with their original owners. During this she finds a book of poetry inscribed to Annelise. This causes Emmy to find out more about Annelise and the Edelweiss Pirates.

Face Time the second installment of the Charlotte McNally series. Charlie and her colleagues are investigating the possible wrongful conviction of a woman. She confessed, but is she hiding someone or information as to who really did it.

My Mama, Cass is a memoir written by the daughter of Cass Elliot who gain fame as part of the music group The Mama's and the Papa's. She relates her mother's life through stories she gained from family and friends. The latter half of the book is of the author's life, and she also worked in the music business.

Crochet

Heading into the Memorial Day weekend. Everyone stay safe.

The cool rainy weather has moved on. I got the back yard mowed yesterday and hope to get the rest done on Friday. It will look good for the weekend.

My closest JoAnn's is to close on the 23rd, the other one I shop at closes the 27th and I got an email that the last day any store will be open is May 30th.

This is what I picked up on Thursday to make hats with this summer. Discount was up to 70%, so I made out good here. This was $100 worth of yarn if you were paying full price!

On to complete projects!

Red Heart, Bitty Stripes, Mermaid. Bitty Stripes is a newer yarn mix from Red Heart, they now have more colors and I like the way this works up. One of my favorites!

Red Heart, Black/Cyan Granny Square. I think most know the granny square pattern and the yarn was developed so you didn't have to change yarn colors every round. Lots of colors available, but I don't care for the fact that once you have made the squares, you have to assemble them into something!
Caron Cinnamon Swirl, Beach Towel
Big Twist, Purple Ombre

 Happy Weekend!

Wonderful Wordy Wednesday

BRRRRR, it decided to revert to early spring this week. Temps in the 40s and 50s. I even turned the furnace back on Monday. I didn't want to be an icicle getting out of the shower. Very rainy day on Tuesday as well. Slowly improving and hoping to be near normal by this coming weekend.

Weekend is Memorial Day weekend here in the US, and I will be participating in our local parade. My friend has a Corvette and her club will be in the parade and I get to ride shotgun. I haven't been actually IN a parade in decades. Early meet up with the group for breakfast, then on to the parade assembly area. She has a convertible, so maybe we get a local celebrity to ride. Report next week.

My neighbor gave up on no mow May this week. Most of the lawns on my street look nice and neat. Got my annuals planted in my planters this week too. At least I didn't have to water them myself for a few days.

Tits Up, everything you wanted to know about female breasts. Body positivity, from the perspectives of sex workers, breast surgeons, bra designers. Cultural and religious aspects as well.

One Perfect Couple, another dandy from Ruth Ware. Five couples on a tropical island for a reality TV show. Cut off with no ability to contact anyone the island is hit by a terrible storm. Who will survive? I'm not into reality TV shows, this was described as reality TV meets Agatha Christie.

The Last Mrs Parrish - I had read this book several years ago and couldn't remember the exact plot from the library synopsis. I wanted to check it out to see if I wanted to read the sequel. It wasn't the plot I thought, so not sure if I will read the next one, The Next Mrs Parrish

Oh yeah! I haven't moved in over twenty years but I do remember all the boxes of books. When my brother moved around twenty years ago, I can't remember how many tons of weight in books he moved from St. Louis to Tulsa!

I had just moved out to my new community before they opened the new library. When it came time to move to the new building the community was encouraged to check out as many books as you wanted, with a due date of eight weeks later, only to be returned to the new place. Far fewer books to move and they didn't all come back at the same time!

Crochet Stuff

Taking a day each week to share my various crochet project since last fall. I do crochet while I watch TV, especially sports. Keeps me from nervous eating during the game. Most likely to happen during football games. Gotta keep the hands clean while working on a project.

An activity to keep me busy, keep my hands going. What I make I donate through the local food pantry. The pantry clients get to select something when it is their birthday. I and others donate blankets. I make sure that I don't duplicate yarn colors in a given donation year. That way they get something unique for their selection.

So for the coming weeks I will share my creations. For each one I list the manufacturer of the yarn and the color. In case you like the yarn and want to create something of your own.

Red Heart, Parrot Stripe

Lion Brand Bundle of Love, Unicorn this is a good baby color mix if you wanted to do a blanket for a baby. Although I usually offer the new parents the option to pick other colors if they don't want the baby pastel look.
Red Heart, Papaya

 Caron, Simply Soft, Rainbow Bright

This last one I made double size for a friend who was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Something she could cuddle up with during treatments or at home. Plus some hats to cover her head. Thankfully she is doing very well and back to normal activities after her surgery.

Wonderful Wordy Wednesday

Come by on Friday, I will be starting a series to show off all of my crochet projects of the past season!

Eastside Cats, I looked up the author you mentioned last week, Jonathan Edward Durham. My library system doesn't have his book. Guess I will have to skip this one as I don't buy books!

Weather has gotten much nicer. I have been spending time doing yard work. The biggest project is to keep the volunteer trees under control. I bought a mini-chain saw, works great. Much faster than manual sawing. Then after I cut the tree back I splashed some motor oil on the cut. Hopefully reducing the grow back. Also thinking of getting someone who digs up stumps to work on what it left.

Brush pickup started this week where I live. I always have something to contribute! This is the pile on Saturday. I keep adding until they actually pick it up.

Getting some reading time in too. Chores, reading, computer stuff, crocheting hats. Rinse and repeat.

Death in the Details, set in post World War II, Maple finds herself a widow and in financial straights. She sets out to make money by doing detailed dollhouses. When her first customer turns up dead she recreates the scene to help identify the killer.

The Stranger in the Library another installment of the Lighthouse mysteries. A big art show is being held in Nags Head. The library does an educational exhibit too. When a painting is stolen from the library, and the organizer of the real exhibit it murdered, the local team of cops and librarians work to figure out why and who done it.

A Fatal Inheritance a detailed history of the p53 gene that influences familial cancer. P53 is a cancer suppression gene which is found to have mutated and then past from generation to generation. It affects all cancers so families will have various cancers, from childhood to adult. Interesting in that the author's family is one of those affected, but he does not have the mutation and he has been cancer free. He extensively writes on his family members who have had multiple bouts of cancer and those that have been fatal.

The Situation Room is an interesting book about the secure room where strategic decisions are made in the White House. In its current use it was developed during the Kennedy administration and the author provides various examples on how the area has been used from JFK through the Biden administration.

Wonderful Wordy Wednesday

Spring is here, I have had to use the lawn mower. At least on the areas that had gotten shaggy. I don't do No Mow May, my grass would grow way too long and my mower wouldn't get through it. I do have lots of other flowers for the pollinators to feed on. The crab apple and lilacs should be blooming soon too.

These are the trees at the track this last weekend. Weather was dry, thankfully. Now a break from events until early June.

Ducky invading my lap and checking out the local news. He is just hanging out as a senior cat.

The Lies that Bind the next installment of the Bibliophile Mysteries. Brooklyn is again involved with solving a murder or two. At least she isn't a suspect this time.

Midnight in Chernobyl is a thorough retelling of the accident that occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in April 1986. This area was part of the Soviet Union back then and in spite of the new glasnost or openness by Mikhail Gorbachev the country did their best to hide the full extent of the accident. Author goes through the initial actions to contain the radioactive emissions and the long term effects on people and places. This area is now part of the country of Ukraine and Chernobyl is north of the capital of Kiev.
