Caturday - Retirement 101 - Session 4

HiYa, Ducky here. Oh, it has been so nice around here the past few days. The hots and muggies are gone and lots of open windows. So nice! Me and mum have been enjoying it day and night! Yep even at night, why, cuz that makes sleeping better.
Which brings us to this weeks retirement topic - Sleeping

Now when beans retire they don't really have a set schedule to live their life by. So they don't HAVE to get up at a certain time. That is nice for them, but sometimes things can get way out of whack.

We know some of our blogging buddies have retired beans that choose to keep different sleep schedules. They stay up late, get up late and for us kitties that can create problems. You know we like to get fed on reasonable normal and usual schedules. For me, that isn't a huge problem, mum always has enuf crunchies out for me to eat. But other kitties that get gooshy foods, well their little tummies must be empty. You have my OK to jump, meow, sing or do what ever you need to do to get your beans out of the sack to feed you.
I am lucky, mum is keeping a pretty normal schedule. She usually goes to bed about the same time she did when she was day hunting, but gets up about an hour later. Her little fitthing, tells her she is getting at least 8 hours of sleep and she is happy for that. She feels so much better getting enuf sleep.

A few nights she has stayed up later, playing too much on the puter, then she does sleep a bit later than usual. Although only three times since she retired has she turned on the noisy box by the bed to get up by. Twice were for racy car days so she got there on time. The other was this week as a furiend wanted to meet her for breakfast! Well, thankfully for mum, not a really early breakfast. But mum didn't want to miss it, she hadn't seen this furiend in a while.

I sit on mum at night so she stays in bed. Once she falls asleep, I can go to my own sleepy spot or if the window is open, I jump up there. I can keep watch in case she tries to get up and wander off! No she does not sleep walk.
Usually early in the AM, she is sort of awake, makes a brief visit to her litter box room, then gets back in bed. I come and snuggle under the covers with her. We have a nice system. She lays on her left side, and her left arm is stretched out away from her body. I crawl under the covers, turn around and stretch out long her tummy, resting my front legs and head on her arm. I purr like crazy and at times we both fall back asleep.
Once she finally gets all the way awake we have a nice play time. I bring my mousie with me to bat around and mum will toss it for me to chase.

So, hopefully you and your human can get a sleeping pattern that works for both of you. But don't you be letting them miss meals!

Next weeks topic - Play time.

Happy weekend all. Long holly-day weekend her in Mericky. Drive safe if you are going somewhere.

  1. It sounds like you have your mum well trained. You have developed a happy schedule!
( Having coffee in bed with Rufus the Red)

  2. Sounds like things are getting into a routine for you and your mum.
Even better, it works for both of you :)
    Life is good.

  3. We are in a slightly different situation, Ducky, as #1 is not retired but she works mainly from home. She tends to go to bed and get up more or less at the same time. When, for some reason, she has to get up earlier, it's quite a funny sight because she gets up but we don't!

    Have a great weekend!

    The Chans

  4. That's an excellent routine the two of you have developed there Ducky!

    Sydney, Australia

  5. Ducky, you are a really good boy.
Me ? This day mom sent me to naughty room ( me woke her up 4 am. tee..heh )

    Have an easy weekend

  6. Ducky, We know we have been really, really terrible about commenting, but I have been VERY carefully reading your retirement posts, as I think the Human is getting pretty close to deciding this is her last year of day-hunting. I had no idea there were so very many complex issues involved with retirement and it is so helpful to have this kind of guidance well in advance. It must be the kitty's job to keep them on a schedule and under control lest they just hare off in all directions and make a mess of their lives as they are so likely to do on their own. Thanks, Ducky.

  7. We're enjoying your series on retirement! We've managed to develop a schedule that works for us too!

  8. The Kid Sage and I arrived right after Mom L and Dad P both were retired. So we never had to deal with their day hunting schedules. Lucky us cuz we heard Mom L was gone way more than she was home.

  9. Retirement sounds great. Happy Labour Day weekend!

Thank you so much for coming to my birthday celebration! - Merlin

  10. You trained your mom very well to keep a good and regular routine, Ducky. Purrs

  11. You and your mum have a good routine, Ducky.

  12. Parker wants her brexfast (and dinner too, for that matter) at a certain time each morning -- well, sometimes earlier. That's why she has joined #CatsAgainstLateBrexfast and #CatsFORBrexfast.

Most of the time I'm asleep, she'll stay on the bed or in one of the bedroom windows.

  13. Unless it's a cat show or we have a morning flight, my human rarely gets up before 9, and we are used to her schedule. Even with getting up at 9, she still has to set an alarm - otherwise she might sleep until noon! And that would make our breakfast WAY late!

  14. You've certainly got things worked out purrfectly Ducky! We only hope our mom bean will be as easy to train.

    Sasha, Sami, & Saku

  15. Our mom has pretty much kept the same sleep schedule too, Ducky. And we still get fed in the morning the same time as when she was working. So no problem for us!

  16. Yeah, like here. WE never knew TBT when he worked, but we have had ta adjust ta his changes in sleeping. He gets pretty erratic.

  17. Sounds like that part of retirement is going very well.

  18. I am glad your mom's schedule is working out for you :)

Don't be shy, we loves to hear your meows and mews.
