Stop Thief!

Mum put out a new little feeder for the fevvers. She bought peanuts in the shell and then took them out of the shell and into this feeder. For the past week or so nothing was around it.
Mr Squirrel has figured out how to get down the long hook.
Push his fuzzy little face under the lid and....
Come up with a peanut. Mum wonders what will happen then the peanut level gets lower and he can't reach it.

Then a lovely little white breasted nuthatch showed up to munch, this is what mum wanted to feed at this feeder, little fevvers who like peanuts.
Mr Nuthatch bopped all around the feeder, getting some good stuff to eat and then....
He froze in position and didn't move for the longest time and mum noticed all the other fevvers were gone.

So mum looked up high in all of the trees.......
Mr Hawk, trying to find a snack of his own, was sitting in our neighbors tree! Mum kept watch, Mr Nuthatch probably was very still on the feeder for at least 5 minutes, then scooted away. Then when no more fevvers around, Mr Hawk too off too.

  1. Yes, we do not want Mr. Hawk having a snack at your feeder!

  2. We have a hawk that comes by and scares our birds. Scary ... the squirrels, I don't mind as much.

  3. We have some scary hawks in our neighborhood too & we've seen them get other members of the nuthatch family. Those squirrels are so ingenious with birdfeeders!

  4. I'm glad Mr. Nuthatch got away safely. I wonder if there's Purina Hawkchow or something to keep Mr. Hawk from snacking on little birds!

  6. Here, hawk hawk hawk... come and get some nice fat squirrel... you don't want to eat those tiny birds -- they're just feathers and feet. Squirrels have meat on them, and this one's real well-fed...

  7. Very smart little bird, clever of you to see it too.

  8. Squirrels are very clever at getting food. I am glad that the nuthatch got to eat and didn't get eaten.

  9. Those are nice pictures!

We have a Wild Bird Store near us where my Dad can buy the peanuts for the woodpeckers and nuthatches without having to hsell them. We have a similar feeder, but he added a squrrel shield above it so the squirrels can't steal from the birdies. We also saw a hawk over the weekend - he tried to swoop down and get a dove but was out of luck.

  12. We wish we could have the Feather Channel here! We rent and the landlords would probably complain about the feeders. We're glad the birdie didn't get eaten!

  13. Maximus Spittimus has asked me to advise you that he felt a strong urge to eat the fevvers. Large and small.

He will, however, wait until he is a bit more growed up (as he put it) before attempting large fevvers in case they eat him.

  15. We are glad Mr. Hawk didn't get his supper at your bird feeder. We have Mr and Mrs Hawk who fly into the tree outside our window looking for their supper.

  17. Little Nuthatch did the right thing! Pesky Mr Hawk!
And those sneaky squirrels seem to always figure it out, like no feeder is too challenging for them...even the "squirrel proof" ones!

  18. That dirty squirrel... stealing nuts!!! The nerve.

Your mom got some really great photos of him though. We biggified them to see Mr. Squirrel close up! Maybe you can make some "wanted" posters so the police can catch Mr. Squirrel.
