Garden Thursday

Hello and welcome to Garden Thursday. Still way too cold around here and we had a bit of snow too. But we are going to look at a few things we didn't get a chance to let you know about earlier.

Remember mum was going to try to grow gourds? Back in July we showed that the vines were growing furry nice on the side of the house, back here. But we never got any gourds at all! The vines would grow and some flowers showed up, but nothing.

Now she also had some vines in the front and all but one of those died off. Finally as mum inspected it late in the year, she found gourds.  Tiny gourds, no bigger than her thumb.

She did some reading and these plants have boy flowers and girl flowers. The girl flowers bloom with the baby gourd there, like you see above. But they don't grow big without boy flowers. Mum says she doesn't amember seeing boy flowers at the time time as she had girl flowers. So no big gourds. We didn't even find and see these flowers until late in TockTober, so they wouldn't have even had time to grow up!

Mum will try again next year. Maybe she will have better luck.

Stay warm, love from Virginger and Glimmer.

  1. It's hard to imagine those little green sprouts making gourds. We hope next year goes better.

  9. We didn't know that about gourds. We did know that about lilacs, and wouldn't you know, the people who bought our house pulled out one of the two bushes my mom had, and guess what. No lilacs! Bwa ha ha, those silly people.

  10. We still think those teensy gourds are cute. Next year, you might have giants! Purrs...
