Garden Thursday

::MEOW::

BRRRRRRRRR, Like the boys said yesterday, it sure isn't very spring like outside. Snow covers the ground and while we have seen some of the tu-lips and stuff start to poke above ground, they certainly are not ready to bloom.

But we do see other signs of spring. First the daylight hours are much longer, over 12 hours now and the sun does not set until after 7 PM.

Plus even with the snow, some of the birds are coming back that go away for the winter. First, the party for the red-wing blackbirds is in our yard. Look at all of them! Mum talked with someone she knows that just lives maybe a quarter of a mile away and they said they hadn't seen any of these birds yet. That is because they like our yard so much better.

Plus we have seen grackles and brown-headed cowbirds at the feeder. Mum has seen a few robins, but we haven't seen them in our yard just yet.

With all of the bigger fevvers taking over the one feeder, mum got a smaller one and hung it under the edge of the patio roof. This gives a spot where the little birds can eat in peace. Mum hung it out and within a few hours we had visitors. Plus this is so close to the big windows that go to the floor that the boys are having a blast with the fevver TV channel.
Another sign of spring, the male goldyfinches are starting to molt and show their bright yellow color. They look kinda funny being two toned, but it is a start.

Plus we just saw in the past week a new fevver that we have never seen before. A common Redpoll. According to mum's fevver book they "irregularly migrate from Canada". Which we guess that means, some years they come south, others not. They are the fevvers on the upper left and lower right..

We are hoping for better and more spring like conditions, but the weather guessers are saying don't count on it anytime soon.

See you next week.

Love, Virginger.

    NOTHING is poking its head up here, except snow and ice. We don't know where Spring is, but she's certainly not in our part of the world.
